The Paddle: Your Tool for Forward Progress

An SUP Paddling Devotional

A paddle board is useless without a paddle. The board provides the platform, the stability, the potential – but the paddle is what creates movement. The paddle is what propels you forward. Without paddling, you're just floating.

Your spiritual practices are your paddle.

Prayer. Bible reading. Serving. Worship. Community. These aren't optional religious activities. They're your paddle. They're what move you forward spiritually. Without them, you're just drifting.

Psalm 119:105 says: "Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path." God's Word is your paddle. It propels you forward in the darkness.

Philippians 4:6-7 says: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Prayer is your paddle. It moves you forward when anxiety would stall you.

Hebrews 10:24-25 says: "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Community is your paddle. It propels you forward when isolation would stall you.

1 Peter 1:13 says: "Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming." Hope is your paddle. It moves you forward toward the future.

The tragedy is when people have a board but refuse to paddle. They stand on their faith but don't practice it. They believe in Jesus but don't pray, don't study Scripture, don't serve, don't grow. They have the platform but no propulsion.

James 2:26 says: "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." Faith without the paddle of action is dead.

Tomorrow's Practice: Commit to one spiritual practice this week that serves as your paddle. Not because it's required, but because you want to move forward. Maybe it's a daily Scripture reading time. Maybe it's a prayer practice. Maybe it's serving at a local ministry. Maybe it's meeting with a spiritual mentor. Pick one paddle – one spiritual practice – and use it consistently. Notice how it moves you forward.

Reflection Question: Which spiritual practices (your paddles) have you neglected, and how might recommitting to them move you forward in your faith journey?
