Different Boards for Different Waters (Part 2: Different Designs, Different Purposes)
An SUP Paddling Devotional
Every SUP board has trade-offs. A super-stable beginner board is slow. A fast racing board requires advanced skills. A wave-riding board is different from a touring board. A yoga SUP is different from a fishing SUP. The designer made choices about what to optimize for.
The New Testament authors made similar choices.
Paul's letters are different from Peter's letters. Paul emphasizes grace and faith. Peter emphasizes suffering and perseverance. Are they contradictory? No. They're addressing different communities with different needs.
Paul wrote to churches struggling with understanding grace – that salvation comes through faith, not works. His board was designed for that water: "For by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Peter wrote to communities experiencing persecution. His board was designed for that water: "Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ" (1 Peter 4:12-13).
John wrote for a community questioning Jesus's divinity and identity. His board was designed for that water: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1).
James emphasized practical faith – that faith without works is dead. His board was designed for that water: "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead" (James 2:26).
Matthew emphasized Jesus as the fulfillment of Jewish law and prophecy. His board was designed for that water: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets... but to fulfill them" (Matthew 5:17).
They're not contradictory. They're different boards designed by one Spirit for different waters.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
All Scripture is God-breathed. But it's useful for different purposes – teaching, rebuking, correcting, training. Different boards for different waters.
Tomorrow's Practice: This week, intentionally read different New Testament authors and notice how they approach Jesus and faith differently. Read one chapter from Paul, one from Peter, one from John, one from James. Notice the different "board designs" – the different emphases, different audiences, different purposes. Then ask yourself: what water am I in right now? What board design do I need? Is it grace (Paul)? Perseverance through suffering (Peter)? Deep theological understanding (John)? Practical faith in action (James)? Let the right board design speak to your current conditions.
Reflection Question: What spiritual water are you in right now, and which New Testament author's "board design" speaks most directly to your current needs and conditions?
