The Water as Mirror: What the Water Reflects

One of the most beautiful aspects of paddle boarding is that when the water is calm, it becomes a perfect mirror. You see yourself reflected. You see the sky reflected. You see everything doubled – the real thing and its reflection.
Interestingly, this is exactly how Scripture works.
Hebrews 4:12 says: "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
God's Word acts like the water – it reflects back to us what's actually there. When you read Scripture, you see yourself reflected in it. You see your sin reflected. You see God's grace reflected. You see who you are and who you're becoming.
James 1:23-25 says: "Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do."
The mirror shows you something. The question is: what will you do with what you see?
2 Corinthians 3:18 says: "And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit."
When you look into the mirror of Scripture, you see God's glory. And that reflection changes you. It transforms you into His image.
On a paddle board, when the water is calm enough to reflect you, it's a moment of truth. You see yourself clearly. You can't hide. And that clarity, that seeing yourself as you actually are, becomes the foundation for change.
Tomorrow's Practice: Spend time this week reading Scripture slowly and reflectively, asking: What do I see reflected about myself in this passage? What does it reveal about who I am? What does it reveal about who God is calling me to become? Don't rush. Let the water reflect. Let yourself be seen. Then commit to one change – one way you'll act on what you've seen reflected.
Reflection Question: When you look into the mirror of Scripture and see yourself clearly – your sin, your growth, your potential – what do you see, and what will you do with that reflection?
