Trusting the Lead Rider
A Mountain Biking Devotional
Ever been a young mountain biker, heart racing, gripping the handlebars like they’re your lifeline, terrified you’ll lose sight of the rider you’re following? You’re still learning to pedal without wobbling, and the thought of them disappearing around a bend makes you panic. But then you hit a trail fork, and there they are, waiting to point you the right way, keeping the group together. As a beginner, you learn to trust they’ll wait for you, just as you pause for the kid behind you. Growing in Christ is like that too. You trust Jesus to guide you, and as you grow, you’re called to wait at life’s forks to help someone else stay on the faith trail.
Let’s roll into 2 Timothy 2:1-3: “You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.”
Paul’s mentoring Timothy like a seasoned rider waiting at a trail fork for a nervous young biker. As a kid on the trail, you’re scared of losing the lead rider, but you trust they’ll stop at the next junction to keep you on track. Meanwhile, you’re learning to pause for the rider behind you, ensuring no one’s lost. Paul tells Timothy to grow strong in Christ’s grace, pass on His teachings, and guide others, even when it’s tough—like a soldier pushing through a steep climb. It’s a chain of faith: you trust Jesus, the ultimate lead rider, to wait for you, and you help the person behind you by pointing them to Him, keeping the faith crew together.
What’s this mean for us? As a young mountain biker, you’re focused on not crashing or getting left behind, your eyes glued to the rider ahead, heart pounding when they dip out of sight. But you learn to trust they’ll wait at the fork, just as you stop to make sure the kid behind you doesn’t take a wrong turn. In faith, life’s trail—school stress, friend drama, or figuring out what it means to follow Jesus—can feel scary, like you’re one turn from losing the way. You might wobble, like forgetting to pray or making a bad choice. That’s okay! Trust Jesus, your lead rider, to wait for you with grace. And as you grow, pause to guide someone else—a friend, sibling, or classmate—by sharing a Bible verse (like John 15:4), praying with them, or encouraging them to stick with faith. You don’t need to be a pro—just wait at life’s forks to point them toward Jesus.
Ask yourself: Who’s “behind me” in faith that I can guide at a fork? How can I help them follow Jesus today, trusting He’s waiting for me? Jesus is always at the next junction, and He wants you to help the next rider stay close.
Pray: Lord, thanks for being my lead rider, waiting for me at every fork, even when I’m a nervous newbie. Help me trust Your guidance and pause to guide someone behind me toward You, keeping our faith crew tight. Keep my heart steady and my wheels rolling. Amen.
Take action: Today, pick one person “behind you” in faith—a friend, sibling, or classmate. Pause to guide them, like sharing a verse (try Matthew 5:16), praying together, or talking about a faith choice. Write “Jesus waits for me, I guide others” and stick it on your bike or backpack. When life’s trail feels scary, trust Jesus is waiting at the next fork, and help the next rider stay on His path, keeping the group growing in faith.
