The Wake Is Temporary: Understanding What Creates Your Experience

A Wake Surfing Devotional

Here's something interesting about wake surfing: the wake only exists because the boat is moving. The moment the boat stops, the wake disappears. There's no more platform to ride on. The surfer has nowhere to go.

This teaches a profound lesson: the surfer's entire experience – the ability to ride, the speed, the thrill – is completely dependent on something outside themselves. The boat is moving. The boat is creating the wake. The surfer is just riding what the boat creates.

Without the boat, there is no surfing.

This is actually spiritually liberating once you understand it. You're not self-sufficient. You're not the source of your own power or your own ability. Everything you experience – every good thing in your life, every opportunity, every moment of joy – is flowing from God. You're riding His wake.

The tragedy is when people think they're creating their own wake. They think their success comes from their own power. They think their joy comes from their own effort. They become proud, independent, self-reliant – and they miss the reality that they're riding someone else's wake. They're completely dependent on God's movement.

Psalm 100:3 says: "Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture."

He made us. We are His. We're riding His wake.

Acts 17:25 says: "And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else."

He gives everything. Every breath is riding His wake.

1 Corinthians 4:7 says: "For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not?"

Everything is received. Everything is riding His wake. Why boast as if you created it?

Psalm 24:1 says: "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it."

Everything is His. You're riding His creation, His power, His movement.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."

Grace. A gift. You're riding His wave, not creating your own.

Tomorrow's Practice: This week, practice gratitude for the wake – for recognizing that everything good in your life is flowing from God's movement, not from your own power. When something goes well, instead of taking credit, recognize: I'm riding God's wake. When you experience blessing, pause and thank God: this is created by You, I'm just privileged to ride it. Let this perspective shift you from pride to gratitude.
