Letting Go of the Rope: Advanced Trust

A Wake Surfing Devotional

The ultimate progression in wake surfing is learning to ride without the rope. Advanced surfers eventually let go. They're still in the wake created by the boat, but they're no longer holding the rope. They're riding purely on the boat's power and momentum, completely free, completely unattached.

But here's what's crucial: you don't start there. You can't let go of the rope until you've learned to wake surf with the rope. You have to master holding on before you can master letting go. And even when you let go, the rope is still there – you could grab it if you needed to.

Spiritually, this is spiritual maturity.

A new Christian needs the rope. They need clear connection, constant communication, obvious direction. They can feel God's pull. They're aware of His guidance because they're holding tight to the rope.

But as they mature, something changes. They don't need to hold the rope as tightly. They understand God's direction so well that they can move freely, trusting that they're still in the wake of His power. They've internalized His guidance. They're riding with freedom but still within His influence.

1 Peter 2:2 says: "Like newborn infants, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation."

Milk. Holding the rope. That's where beginners start.

Hebrews 5:12-14 says: "In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."

Milk then solid food. Holding the rope then riding free. Progression.

1 Corinthians 13:11 says: "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the childish ways behind me."

Maturity. Letting go of childish dependence on the rope, but still riding the wake.

Proverbs 22:6 says: "Start children off on the way they should go; even when they are old they will not depart from it."

Start with guidance. With age and maturity, you don't depart from it – you've internalized it.

John 16:12-13 records Jesus saying: "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth."

The Spirit guides. Eventually you don't need Jesus pointing at everything – the Spirit has guided you into truth and you move freely within it.

Tomorrow's Practice: Assess your spiritual maturity. Do you still need to hold the rope tightly – needing constant external guidance? Or have you progressed to where you can ride more freely, having internalized God's guidance? If you're ready, practice letting go a bit. Make decisions based on what you know God values rather than needing constant confirmation. Ride in His wake with more freedom.

Reflection Question: Have you matured spiritually enough to ride with freedom, or do you still need to hold the rope tightly for constant guidance?
