THE SERVE MUST BE UNDERHAND
A Pickleball Devotional
Every pickleball point begins with an underhand serve. You can't smash it overhand like tennis or volleyball. You can't show off with power. You must serve underhand, from below the waist, with at least one foot behind the baseline. It's humble. It's almost gentle. And it's mandatory.
This levels the playing field dramatically. A 75-year-old can serve just as effectively as a college athlete. The serve isn't about power – it's about placement, spin, and strategy. This one rule is a huge reason why pickleball has exploded in retirement communities and multi-generational groups. Strength doesn't give you an unfair advantage.
The underhand serve forces humility into the game from the very first shot. You can't dominate from the start. You can't overpower your opponent before they even get a chance to play. Everyone starts from the same humble position, and the game goes from there.
Philippians 2:3-4 - "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."
In a culture obsessed with platform, power, and dominance, God calls us to lead with humility. Not false modesty or low self-esteem, but genuine humility that doesn't need to overpower others to feel valuable. Jesus – the actual Son of God – washed His disciples' feet. He served. He led from below, not above.
The most effective Christians aren't the ones with the biggest platforms or the most impressive credentials. They're the ones who consistently serve with humility, who value others above themselves, who start every interaction from an "underhand" position rather than trying to dominate.
Humility isn't weakness. In pickleball, the underhand serve requirement doesn't make the game weak – it makes it better. Same with life.
Today's Thought: Start with humility. You don't need to overpower people to make an impact.
