A Pickleball Devotional

If you've played pickleball, you know about the "kitchen" – that seven-foot zone on both sides of the net where you can't volley the ball. It's called the non-volley zone, and it's the rule that makes pickleball what it is. You can't just camp at the net and smash everything. You have to stay back, be patient, and wait for the right moment to move in.

New players hate this rule. They want to rush the net immediately and dominate. But experienced players understand: the kitchen line isn't there to frustrate you – it's there to make the game better. It creates strategy, encourages longer rallies, and keeps the game fun for everyone regardless of power or athleticism. The limitation actually makes the game more enjoyable.

This is one reason pickleball has become the fastest-growing sport in America. People of all ages and abilities can play together because the rules level the playing field. You can't just overpower your opponent – you have to be smart, patient, and strategic.

Psalm 16:6 - "The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance."

God's boundaries in our lives aren't there to frustrate us or limit our joy – they're there to make life better. His guidelines about relationships, money, honesty, and how we treat others aren't arbitrary restrictions. They're like the kitchen line in pickleball – they create the conditions for real flourishing.

We often resist God's boundaries because we think freedom means no limits. But just like pickleball would be terrible without the kitchen rule, life becomes chaotic and unfulfilling when we ignore God's design. The boundaries aren't the problem – they're the gift.
