The One That Got Away

A Fly Fishing Devotional

Every fly fisherman has the story – the massive trout that took the fly, ran hard, jumped spectacularly, and then broke off. The fish was right there, hooked and fighting, and then suddenly... gone. Maybe the knot failed, the line snapped, or the hook pulled out. You're left standing in the river holding your rod with nothing but a story about what almost was.

Here's what's interesting: those are often the fish fishermen remember most. Not the ones they landed easily, but the ones that got away. The near-miss. The almost-had-it. The one that made them feel alive even though it ended in disappointment.

Experienced anglers learn to hold these moments differently than beginners. Beginners get angry, devastated, convinced they failed. But veterans understand: losing fish is part of fishing. You can do everything right and still lose the fish. The breakoff doesn't negate the experience – the fight, the excitement, the brief connection with something wild and beautiful still happened. You just don't get to put it in your net.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 - "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed."

Not everything works out the way you hoped. You prayed for that job and didn't get it. You invested in that relationship and it fell apart. You worked toward that goal and came up short. The disappointment is real, and the loss matters.

But the experience isn't negated just because you didn't get the outcome you wanted. What you learned, how you grew, who you became in the process – that still counts. God was present in the fight even if you don't get to put the victory in your net.

The fish that got away doesn't mean you fished wrong. Sometimes things break. And sometimes, those near-misses shape you more than the easy wins ever could.

Today's Thought: The outcome doesn't determine the value. God is present in the fight, not just the victory.

Reflection Question: What disappointment or "loss" are you letting define you, when you should be recognizing how God was present and working even in what didn't work out?
