READING THE WATER

A Fly Fishing Devotional

Stand at the edge of a stream and ask a beginner where the fish are. They'll guess randomly – maybe that deep pool looks good, or that calm spot near the bank. But ask an experienced fly fisherman and they'll point to specific seams, pocket water behind rocks, undercut banks, and foam lines. They're reading the water – seeing what's invisible to untrained eyes.

Reading water is about understanding what fish need: oxygen, food, cover from predators, and relief from current. Where those factors converge, that's where fish hold. You can have perfect casting technique and the right fly, but if you're fishing dead water, you'll catch nothing. The experienced angler spends more time reading water than actually casting.

This skill takes years to develop. You learn by watching, by asking questions, by paying attention to where you catch fish and where you don't. You start seeing the river differently – not as a pretty backdrop, but as a complex ecosystem with patterns and logic.

Proverbs 4:23 - "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

Just like reading water, we need to learn to read our hearts. Why did that comment bother you so much? Why do you keep making the same mistake? Why does that temptation have such power over you? The answers aren't always obvious on the surface.

Most people go through life reacting to their emotions without understanding where they come from. They cast randomly, hoping something works, instead of learning to read the deeper currents of their own soul. What fears are driving your decisions? What wounds are shaping your reactions? What lies are you believing about yourself or God?

Reading your heart takes time, honesty, and often help from others who can see what you can't. But if you fish dead water – if you never examine what's actually happening inside you – you'll keep coming up empty no matter how hard you try to change.

Today's Thought: You can't catch fish in dead water, and you can't grow without understanding your heart.

Reflection Question: What pattern in your life keeps repeating, and what might it reveal about the deeper currents in your heart that you haven't examined?
