Waiting in the Lineup: Patience and Readiness

A Surfing Devotional

Surfers sit in the lineup – the area where waves form – and they wait. They watch the horizon. They watch other surfers. They're not passive. They're alert, attentive, ready. When a good wave comes, they're positioned and prepared to catch it.

But the waiting can be long. Some days the waves are inconsistent. Some days you wait and wait and the good waves don't come. The surfers who succeed are the ones willing to wait patiently while staying alert and ready.

This is spiritual maturity.

God often calls us to wait. To trust His timing. To be ready for opportunities when they come. But the waiting isn't passive. You're not just sitting around. You're preparing. You're studying Scripture. You're praying. You're positioning yourself spiritually. You're staying alert.

Psalm 27:14 says: "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord."

Wait. Stay strong. Be ready.

Proverbs 8:34-35 says: "Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord."

Watch daily. Wait at the doorway. Active waiting. Ready waiting.

Luke 12:37 records Jesus saying: "It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, them and have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them."

Watching. Waiting. Ready. Positioned.

1 Peter 3:15 says: "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."

Always be prepared. Waiting but ready. Positioned but alert.

The tragedy is when Christians either give up waiting (they stop expecting God to move) or they wait passively (they're not preparing for when God does move). The wise surfers in the lineup are the ones who wait expectantly while staying alert and positioned.

Tomorrow's Practice: This week, practice active waiting. In one area where you're waiting for God to move, commit to staying alert and positioned. Keep praying. Keep preparing. Keep watching. Don't become passive, but don't give up waiting either. When the wave comes – when opportunity appears – you'll be ready to catch it.

Reflection Question: Are you waiting for God to move, and are you staying alert and positioned, or have you given up or become passive in your waiting?
