The Wind: Harnessing Power You Don't Control
A Sailing Devotional
A sailboat has no engine. It can't move on its own. It's completely dependent on the wind. The sailor can't create wind, can't control wind, can't command wind. The sailor can only respond to wind. Read it. Use it. Work with it.
This is both liberating and humbling. Liberating because the power is free – available to anyone willing to harness it. Humbling because you're not in control. The wind is.
Throughout Scripture, wind is used as a symbol for God's power and the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that hovered over creation at the beginning, that fills believers with power, that moves people to action – it's described as wind. Invisible. Powerful. You can't see it directly, only its effects. You can't control it. You can only respond to it.
John 3:6-8 records Jesus teaching: "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
You can't see the wind. You can't control it. But you can see its effects. Same with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:1-4 describes Pentecost: "When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
The Spirit came like wind. Powerful. Unmistakable. Beyond human control. But available to those willing to receive it.
Ephesians 5:18 says: "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."
Be filled. Open yourself. Make space. Let the wind – the Holy Spirit – fill you. You don't create it. You receive it.
A sailor learns to work with wind, not against it. Fighting wind exhausts you. Working with it empowers you. Tacking – adjusting your direction to use the wind efficiently – is how you move forward even when wind isn't perfectly aligned with where you want to go.
Spiritually, this is surrender. Not passivity. Active surrender. You're not sitting still. You're actively engaging with the Holy Spirit's power, adjusting your life to work with God's direction rather than fighting it.
Proverbs 21:30 says: "There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord."
Fighting God exhausts you. Working with God empowers you.
Tomorrow's Practice: This week, practice active surrender to the Holy Spirit. In prayer, ask Him to fill you, direct you, empower you. Then throughout the day, notice where the "wind" of God is blowing – opportunities to serve, people to encourage, directions He's opening up. Don't fight against those directions. Tack toward them. Let the Spirit's power move you forward.
Reflection Question: Do you try to fight against God's direction and exhaust yourself, or do you work with the Holy Spirit's power by adjusting your course to align with His will?
