The Touring Kayak: Equipped for the Long Journey
A Kayaking Paddling Devotional
A touring kayak is different from a sit-on-top. It's longer, sleeker, designed for distance. It has compartments for storage – water, food, shelter, supplies. It's built for a multi-day journey, not just an afternoon paddle. You can't access things easily while paddling, so you have to plan ahead. You need to know what you'll need for the journey and pack accordingly.
This is what sustained faith looks like.
Following Jesus isn't a weekend. It's a lifetime. You don't just show up Sunday mornings and hope to coast. You need equipment, supplies, preparation, resources stashed away for the difficult sections ahead. You need community, Scripture, prayer practices, spiritual disciplines – compartments of resources you can draw on when the journey gets long.
Hebrews 12:1-2 says: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."
Perseverance. Not a sprint. A race. A long journey. You need equipment for that.
2 Peter 1:5-9 says: "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love."
Add to your faith. Build compartments. Stock supplies. Knowledge is a compartment. Self-control is a compartment. Perseverance is a compartment. Love is a compartment. By the time you reach the end of the journey, your kayak is full of resources.
Luke 8:15 says: "But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop."
Retain it. Store it. Like compartments. Persevere. That's how you finish a long journey.
Proverbs 24:3-4 says: "By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures."
Build compartments. Fill them with wisdom, understanding, knowledge. These are your supplies for the journey.
Tomorrow's Practice: Assess your spiritual supplies. Do you have regular Bible reading habits? A prayer practice? A community of faith? Spiritual mentors? These are your compartments for the long journey. Identify one resource you're missing and work to develop it this month. You're building for a lifetime.
Reflection Question: Are you treating faith as a sit-on-top weekend paddle or as a touring kayak lifetime journey, and what compartments of spiritual resources do you need to develop for the long haul?
