The Spin Serves Return

A Pickleball Devotional

One of the trickiest shots in pickleball is returning a serve with heavy spin. The ball comes at you spinning sideways or with topspin that makes it jump unpredictably after the bounce. New players panic and try to hit it hard back, which usually sends the ball flying out of bounds or into the net.

Experienced players know the secret: you don't fight spin with power – you absorb it with a soft touch. You let your paddle give a little, you adjust your angle, and you gently redirect the ball rather than attacking it. The harder you try to muscle through the spin, the worse your return gets.

This counterintuitive approach is one of the skills that makes pickleball so mentally engaging. It's not just about hitting hard – it's about reading what's coming at you and responding with the right technique, even when that technique feels passive or gentle.

Proverbs 15:1 - "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

When life throws you a curveball – someone criticizes you unfairly, a situation spins out of control, a conflict comes at you with unexpected intensity – your instinct is to hit back hard. To defend yourself aggressively. To match their energy with equal or greater force.

But just like returning a spin serve, meeting intensity with intensity rarely works. A soft answer, a gentle response, a calm reaction – these absorb the spin and redirect the energy in a productive direction. It takes more skill and self-control than just swinging hard, but it's far more effective.

This doesn't mean being a doormat. It means responding strategically instead of reactively. It means having the confidence to meet aggression with composure rather than escalation.

Today's Thought: Don't fight spin with power. Absorb it with wisdom and redirect it with grace.
