The Quality of Your Bike Determines Your Love of Riding
A Cycling Devotional
A child gets a cheap, heavy bike with rusty gears that don't shift smoothly, tires always going flat, brakes that don't work well, frame that's the wrong size. Does that child love riding? Almost certainly not. That child experiences frustration, struggle, discouragement. The bike doesn't perform. So the child gives up.
But give that same child a quality bike – properly sized, smooth shifting gears, reliable brakes, good tires, lightweight frame – and something changes. The bike responds the way it should. Riding becomes effortless. Fun. The child wants to ride more. Falls in love with cycling.
The difference isn't the child. It's the bike.
This applies spiritually: the quality of your spiritual environment determines your love of faith.
A low-quality church experience – boring preaching, no community, no challenge, judgment instead of grace, buildings that feel cold – discourages faith. A person attending that church doesn't experience Jesus well. They experience dysfunction. So they give up.
But a quality spiritual community – teaching that challenges and encourages, genuine community, authentic worship, grace, people who actually live their faith – that transforms everything. People fall in love with following Jesus because they experience what Jesus is actually like.
1 Peter 2:2-3 says: "Like newborn infants, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good."
Tasted. Experienced. A quality spiritual environment lets people actually taste God's goodness.
Psalm 34:8 says: "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him."
Taste. Experience. Quality matters. A cheap spiritual experience leaves people hungry. Quality spiritual community nourishes people.
Hebrews 10:24-25 says: "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another."
The quality of your gathering – the community, the encouragement, the accountability – determines whether people want to keep coming back.
Matthew 11:28 records Jesus saying: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
Rest. Gentleness. Humility. Quality spiritual experience. That's what draws people. That's what makes them want to stay.
Tomorrow's Practice: This week, evaluate the quality of your spiritual environment. Are you in a community that actually nourishes your faith, or are you experiencing dysfunction and discouragement? If it's low quality, commit to finding a higher-quality spiritual community. You deserve a bike (a church, a faith community) that actually works well and helps you fall in love with following Jesus.
