The Playboat: Responsive, Agile, Skilled Kayaking in Turbulent Water

A playboat is a short, responsive kayak designed for white water. It's not stable like a sit-on-top. It's agile, reactive, built for quick maneuvers. You can carve turns, play in waves, respond instantly to changing conditions. But it requires skill. If you don't know what you're doing, a playboat will dump you. It's unforgiving to mistakes. It demands technique and presence.
This is what deep faith looks like – the faith of someone who's been following Jesus long enough to handle the turbulent waters.
A new Christian needs the stability of basic faith – grace, forgiveness, God's love. That's the sit-on-top kayak. But eventually, if you're growing, you move into more responsive, demanding faith. You encounter God's complexity. You face suffering. You struggle with theological questions. You have to navigate white water. And that requires a playboat – a more responsive, agile understanding of God.
Hebrews 5:12-14 says: "In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."
Milk for infants. Solid food for the mature. A playboat is solid food faith – responsive, demanding, requiring skill and maturity.
1 Peter 2:2 says: "Like newborn infants, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation."
Crave. Grow. Eventually you graduate from milk to solid food. From sit-on-top to playboat.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Teaching. Rebuking. Correcting. Training. That's playboat level faith – more complex, more demanding, more responsive.
Tomorrow's Practice: Identify one area where your faith is immature – still relying on simple answers when reality is more complex. Maybe it's your understanding of suffering, or God's justice, or complex theological questions. This week, read something that challenges your simple understanding and engage with the complexity. Move from sit-on-top to playboat.
Reflection Question: Are you ready to graduate from simple, stable faith to more complex, responsive faith that can handle the white water, or are you comfortable staying in the sit-on-top?
