The Catch: Focus and Trust in the Moment

A Softball Devotional

A fly ball goes up and an outfielder has to judge it. Where will it land? They start moving. They track it with their eyes. Their entire focus is on that ball. Everything else – the crowd, the score, what just happened – disappears. There's only the ball and the commitment to catch it.

When the moment comes – when the ball is about to come down – the fielder has to trust their positioning. They've judged the trajectory. They've positioned themselves. Now they have to trust their read. They can't look at their glove. They can't second-guess. They just have to trust and reach.

And when they catch it? Relief. Joy. They did it. Focus and trust in the moment.

Spiritually, this is what faith looks like in crisis moments.

When a crisis comes – when you're in the middle of difficulty – your old spiritual training becomes active. You can't look at your feet. You can't second-guess your faith. You just have to focus on Jesus and trust that your training has prepared you. You have to catch the moment – to handle the crisis with the faith you've been building.

Proverbs 4:25-27 says: "Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil."

Fix your gaze. That's focus.

Hebrews 12:1-2 says: "Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."

Fix your eyes on Jesus. Focus. Trust. That's the moment.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Trust. Don't look at your feet. Trust your positioning.

Psalm 23:4 says: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

In the darkest moment. Trust. Focus on God's presence.

2 Corinthians 5:7 says: "For we live by faith, not by sight."

Faith, not sight. Trust in the catch.

Tomorrow's Practice: Practice moment-by-moment focus this week. When difficulty comes, don't panic. Focus on Jesus. Trust your spiritual training. You've prepared for this. You've built faith. Now trust the catch. When the crisis moment comes, you'll be ready because you've trained. Practice maintaining focus on Jesus rather than on your fear.

Reflection Question: When spiritual crises come, do you maintain focus on Jesus and trust your faith, or do you lose focus and panic?
