The Bigger Ball: God's Grace Makes It Easier to Connect
A Softball Devotional
Softball uses a larger, softer ball than baseball. A softball is roughly the size of a grapefruit compared to baseball's hardball. This means the strike zone is bigger. It's harder to throw wild pitches that miss the zone entirely. The ball is easier to see. It's easier to track. It's easier to hit.
In other words, softball is designed to be more accessible. The bigger ball gives hitters more chances. More margin for error. More opportunity to make solid contact.
Theologically, this is exactly like grace.
God could have made connecting with Him as difficult as hitting a hardball fastball – precise, difficult, requiring expert technique. But instead, He made it like a softball. He made grace bigger. He made connecting easier. He gave us more margin for error.
Romans 5:1-2 says: "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God."
Access to grace. It's accessible. Like a bigger ball. Easier to connect with.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Grace. A gift. Not earned. Not based on perfect performance. It's the bigger ball – easier to connect with.
John 3:16 says: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Whoever. Not the elite. Not the perfect hitters. Whoever connects gets saved. The ball is big enough for everyone.
Psalm 86:5 says: "You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you."
Forgiving. Good. Abounding in love. The bigger ball of grace.
1 Peter 1:3-4 says: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you."
Great mercy. New birth. That's what happens when you connect with the bigger ball of grace.
Tomorrow's Practice: This week, stop trying to be the perfect hitter. Stop thinking you need to perform flawlessly to connect with God. Recognize that grace is the bigger ball – it's designed for you to connect with it. You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to have expert technique. Just swing. Connect with grace. Let God's bigger ball make it easier for you to find Him.
