Slow Is Smooth, and Smooth Is Fast
A Shooting Devotional
There's a saying in the shooting world: "Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast." At first, it sounds contradictory. But experienced shooters understand it perfectly. If you rush your shots – hurrying your aim, jerking the trigger, not thinking through your movements – you'll miss. You'll have to shoot again. You'll make mistakes. You'll actually be slower because you have to correct your misses.
But if you slow down, take time to aim properly, think through each movement, execute smoothly – you'll hit the mark the first time. You'll be faster overall because you're not wasting shots on misses.
Rushing causes inefficiency. Smoothness creates speed.
This principle applies to spiritual life perfectly.
Many Christians are in a hurry. They want quick answers, quick growth, quick solutions. They rush through decisions, rush through Scripture reading, rush through prayers. And then they wonder why they keep making mistakes, why they keep missing the mark, why they're not growing faster.
But the ones who slow down – who take time to think through decisions, who read Scripture carefully, who pray thoughtfully, who move intentionally – they actually progress faster. They make fewer mistakes. They hit the mark more consistently. They grow faster because they're not constantly correcting missteps.
Proverbs 21:5 says: "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to loss; but all who are hasty come to poverty."
Diligent. Careful. Smooth. That leads to profit. Hasty leads to loss.
James 1:19 says: "My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."
Quick to listen. Slow to speak. That's the opposite of what our culture teaches. But it's the way to smooth, effective communication and decision-making.
Psalm 37:7 says: "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes."
Be still. Wait patiently. That's smoothness. That's the way to actually move fast spiritually.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 says: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the sun."
There's a time. Not rushing. Not everything at once. There's a rhythm, a timing, a smoothness to life lived well.
Tomorrow's Practice: Tomorrow, deliberately slow down one area of your day. Instead of rushing through your morning, slow down and be intentional. Instead of rushing through a decision, take time to think it through carefully. Notice how slowing down actually creates better results and ultimately faster progress.
Reflection Question: Where are you rushing in your spiritual life when slowing down would actually help you progress faster?
