Shifting Gears Before You Faceplant
A Mountain Biking Devotional
Ever tackled a monster hill on a mountain bike, legs churning like you’re mixing concrete, only to realize you’re in the wrong gear? You’re panting, sweating buckets, and moving slower than a turtle on a coffee break. Then—click—you shift to the right gear, and boom, you’re cruising like you’re auditioning for a biking montage in a cheesy action flick. Life’s like that too. As Christians, we can grind away in the wrong gear—our own strength—when God’s yelling, “Yo, shift to My power before you faceplant!”
Let’s coast over to Philippians 4:13: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Paul, the spiritual equivalent of a pro mountain biker, knew life’s trail was no kiddie ride. He hit gnarly climbs—jail time, angry mobs, shipwrecks, you name it. But did he try to pedal through on his own? Nope! He shifted into the gear of Christ’s strength, trusting God to power him through like a divine energy drink. When we try to muscle through life’s hills—work stress, family chaos, or standing up for faith in a world that’s like, “Nah, bro, chill”—we end up wheezing. Shift to God’s strength, and you’ll glide through with a goofy grin instead.
So, what’s the deal for us? Life’s trail is packed with climbs steeper than your grandma’s driveway. Maybe you’re grinding through a work deadline, parenting drama, or dodging cultural curveballs that want you to ditch your faith for a “cooler” vibe. If you’re stuck in the self-reliance gear, you’re probably red-faced and ready to flop. God’s got the perfect gear—His strength. Pray for His wisdom before that big meeting, lean on His peace when anxiety’s got you wobbling, or trust Him to guide you when the trail gets sketchy.
Ask yourself: Where am I grinding in the wrong gear, looking like a spiritual hot mess? How can I shift to God’s strength today? He’s ready to give you a boost, no training wheels required.
Pray: Lord, sorry for pedaling through life like I’m in a bad comedy sketch. Help me shift to Your strength, trusting You to get me over the hills without eating dirt. Keep me rolling for You. Amen.
Take action: Spot one “hill” today where you’re struggling—maybe a worry or a tough call. Pause, pray, and ask God to shift you into His strength. Jot down a note like “God’s my gearshift” and slap it on your fridge or phone. When you feel like you’re about to crash, picture Jesus tossing you a high-five and saying, “Shift it, champ!” Then pedal on with His power.
