Rest as Resistance

A Camping Devotional

In our normal lives, we're trained to be productive. We measure our worth by what we accomplish. We fill every moment with activity. Rest feels like laziness. Stillness feels like wasting time. Doing nothing feels irresponsible.

Camping gives you permission to do less. Maybe you're sitting around a campfire not accomplishing anything. Maybe you're taking a hike just for the experience, not to cross something off your bucket list. Maybe you're sitting in a chair watching the sunset while everything back home waits undone.

And the world doesn't end. Your value doesn't decrease. You're actually more present, more alive, more yourself.

This is revolutionary in a culture obsessed with productivity.

Matthew 11:28 records Jesus saying: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

Jesus is offering something radical: rest. Not as a reward for productivity, but as a gift. As something your soul desperately needs. Your exhaustion isn't a sign that you need to work harder – it's a sign that you need to rest and reconnect with Jesus.

Psalm 23:1-3 says: "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."

Notice: God makes you lie down. He leads you to quiet waters. He refreshes you. Rest isn't something you earn through productivity. It's something God provides when you're willing to receive it.

Tomorrow's Practice: Tomorrow, commit to not checking work emails or focusing on productivity for at least a few hours. Instead, intentionally rest. Sit and read. Take a slow walk. Nap. Sit by a fire. Notice how it feels. Then commit to protecting rest in your regular life – one evening this week where you refuse to work or be productive, and you just be present and receive restoration.
