Reading the Water: Discernment and Spiritual Navigation

An experienced sailor doesn't just look at the wind. They read the water. They notice ripples indicating wind shifts. They see the color and texture of the water revealing underwater obstacles. They watch other boats to understand current. They combine all these observations into a comprehensive picture of conditions.

This skill – reading water – is what allows sailors to navigate safely and effectively. A sailor who only looks at the sky and ignores the water will run aground.

Spiritually, this is discernment.

Discernment is the ability to read spiritual conditions. To sense where the Holy Spirit is moving. To notice temptations before they fully develop. To see through deception. To understand the spiritual climate around you.

1 Thessalonians 5:21 says: "Test all things; hold fast what is good."

Test. Read the water. Use discernment.

Proverbs 14:15 says: "The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps."

Give thought. Read the water. Don't just believe everything you hear or follow blindly.

Hebrews 5:14 says: "But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."

Trained themselves. Discernment isn't instinctive. It's developed through practice, through reading conditions, through learning to notice spiritual currents.

1 Corinthians 2:14-15 says: "The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments."

The person with the Spirit can discern. Can read the water. Can sense spiritual conditions.

Many Christians navigate blindly. They don't read conditions. They don't sense danger ahead. They don't notice the spiritual currents affecting their lives. They run aground because they weren't paying attention.

Tomorrow's Practice: This week, practice spiritual discernment. Before making a decision, pause. Read the water. What are the spiritual conditions? What currents are at work? What potential obstacles do you see? What is the Holy Spirit saying? Don't just look at the surface. Read the water. Consider all the factors. Then navigate carefully based on what you discern.

Reflection Question: Do you actively practice spiritual discernment, reading the spiritual water around you, or do you navigate blindly and wonder why you run into obstacles?
