Reading the Conditions: Understanding What God Is Doing
A Surfing Devotional
Before a surfer even gets in the water, they read conditions. They look at the sky. They watch the water. They notice wind direction, swell size, tide, current. Experienced surfers can look at the ocean and know immediately: is this a day to paddle out? Are conditions good for my skill level? Where in the lineup should I position myself?
A beginner might see water and think "let's go." But water that looks perfect to a beginner might be dangerous or unrideable. A large swell can be thrilling or deadly depending on your skill. A strong current can push you exactly where you need to be or sweep you away. Reading conditions is the difference between a great session and disaster.
Spiritual life requires the same skill: reading conditions. Understanding what God is doing. Sensing the timing. Knowing when to act and when to wait. Discerning what God is calling you toward and what's not meant for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 says: "Test all things; hold fast what is good."
Test. Read conditions. Use discernment.
Proverbs 14:15 says: "The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps."
Give thought. Read the spiritual conditions around you. Don't just jump into every opportunity.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 says: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the sun: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal..."
Time and season. Conditions matter. There's a time for action and a time for waiting.
Proverbs 3:21 says: "My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion."
Sound judgment. Discernment. Reading conditions.
Many Christians jump into situations without reading conditions. They join ministries that aren't healthy. They invest in relationships that won't work. They pursue opportunities that aren't meant for them. They don't read the spiritual conditions. And they end up in dangerous situations.
Tomorrow's Practice: Before making any significant decision this week, spend time reading conditions. Pray. Ask God to reveal the state of things. Read Scripture related to the decision. Talk to wise people. Observe how God is working. Don't just jump in because an opportunity appears. Read conditions first. Then act from a place of discernment rather than impulse.
