Reading the Batter: Adjusting Your Approach Based on Circumstances

An experienced pitcher doesn't throw the same pitch to every batter. They read the situation. A slugger gets low fastballs to avoid power. A contact hitter gets pitches out of the zone to make them chase. A young batter might get something they can hit to build confidence. A nervous batter might get a strike to calm them down.

The pitcher adjusts based on the batter, the count, the game situation, and what they've learned about this particular person's tendencies. Flexibility and discernment, not rigidity.

Spiritually, this is discipleship.

Jesus didn't treat every person the same way. He was gentle with the woman at the well who'd been rejected. He was confrontational with the rich young ruler who needed to hear hard truth. He was patient with Peter's confusion but direct with the disciples' fear. He read people and adjusted His approach.

Many Christians want a one-size-fits-all spiritual approach. But maturity requires reading people and adjusting based on what they need.

1 Thessalonians 5:14 says: "And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone."

Different people need different approaches. Warn some. Encourage others. Help the weak. Be patient with all.

2 Timothy 2:2 says: "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."

Teach others. That requires knowing them and adjusting your teaching to what they need.

Proverbs 27:12 says: "The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty."

Prudent people read situations and adjust.

1 Corinthians 9:22 says: "To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some."

Paul adjusted his approach. Read the situation. Give people what they need.

Colossians 4:5-6 says: "Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you know how to answer each person."

Answer each person. That means reading them and adjusting.

Tomorrow's Practice: This week, practice reading people spiritually. Instead of applying the same approach to everyone, observe what different people need. One person needs encouragement. Another needs challenge. One needs gentleness. Another needs directness. Read the batter and adjust your pitch accordingly.
