Provision Flowing Downward

A Camping Devotional

Look at how water works in nature. Rain falls on mountains. Snow accumulates at high elevations. That frozen water slowly melts through spring and summer, feeding springs and streams. Those streams become rivers. Those rivers water valleys and sustain communities far below.

Everything below depends on provision flowing down from above. The valley doesn't create its own water – it receives it. The community doesn't manufacture the river – it drinks from it. Every living thing survives because of provision that originates at a higher place.

This is exactly how your spiritual life works.

Matthew 6:11 says: "Give us today our daily bread." Jesus taught His disciples to pray for provision, not because God doesn't know what you need, but because He wants you to recognize your dependence on Him. You don't create your own provision. You receive it. And receiving requires humility and gratitude.

The tragedy is when we forget this. We see provision – food, money, relationships, health – and we think we created it. We think we earned it. We stop looking up at the source. We start thinking we're independent.

But you're not independent. You're completely dependent on provision flowing down from above – from God. Every breath is a gift. Every moment is a gift. Every resource is a gift.

Philippians 4:19 says: "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." Not some of your needs. Not when you deserve it. All your needs. According to infinite riches.

Tomorrow's Practice: Tomorrow, consciously receive something – a meal, water, a sunrise – and pause to acknowledge where it came from. Thank God specifically for that provision. Then identify one area where you've been trying to create your own provision instead of trusting God. Write it down and commit to receiving His provision in that area instead of scrambling to create it yourself.
