Playing Together: Community and Joy in Shared Experience

A Game Night Devotional

The most memorable thing about game night isn't who won. It's the laughter. It's the camaraderie. It's sitting together for hours, sharing a common experience, ribbing each other good-naturedly, celebrating together. The game is just the structure that brings people together. The real value is the connection.

This is what Christians often miss about faith.

Faith isn't primarily about individual spiritual achievement. It's about shared experience with others in a community. It's about sitting together. It's about facing challenges together. It's about celebrating victories together and grieving losses together. It's about belonging to something bigger than yourself.

The game night works because everyone shows up. Everyone plays. Everyone's engaged. Nobody sits on the sidelines thinking "I'm not good enough to play." Everyone matters. Everyone contributes. Everyone's needed.

This is what the church should be.

Hebrews 10:24-25 says: "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

Meet together. Encourage each other. That's where joy lives.

1 Corinthians 12:12-27 says: "Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ... Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it."

Many parts. One body. Shared experience.

Proverbs 27:17 says: "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

Together you're sharpened. Community makes you better.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says: "Two are better than one... If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up."

Two are better than one. Community saves you.

Romans 12:15 says: "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."

Shared joy. Shared grief. That's community.

Tomorrow's Practice: This week, invest in shared experience with your faith community. Don't just attend church alone – have coffee with someone. Don't just pray alone – pray with others. Don't just study Scripture alone – discuss it with others. Make space for the connection, the laughter, the shared experience. Remember: the structure (the game) matters, but the connection (the people) matters more.
