Look Where You're Going: Your Focus Determines Your Path

A Skiing Devotional

Every ski instructor teaches the same fundamental principle: look where you want to go, not where you are or where you're afraid of going. This seems obvious, but it's not. Beginners naturally look down at their skis, watching them move. Intermediate skiers look at the bumps immediately in front of them. Both make skiing harder and more dangerous.

Advanced skiers look far ahead. They're already looking at their next turn while completing the current one. They're looking at the transition between runs while finishing the current run. Their eyes are always ahead of their body. And remarkably, their skis follow where their eyes lead.

This is more than technique. It's physics. Your body naturally moves toward what your eyes are focused on. If you look down, your body follows – you lean forward, lose balance, pick up unwanted speed. If you look at an obstacle, you're drawn toward it. If you look at where you want to go, you naturally steer toward it.

This principle is spiritual gold.

Proverbs 4:25-27 says: "Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil."

Eyes forward. Gaze fixed. That's the posture of spiritual vision. Not looking at obstacles, not looking down at your feet, not looking at distractions. Eyes ahead, fixed on the destination.

Philippians 3:13-14 records Paul saying: "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

Straining toward what is ahead. Not looking back. Not focused on the past. Eyes forward toward the goal.

Hebrews 12:1-2 says: "Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."

Fix your eyes on Jesus. That's where you should be looking. Not down at your circumstances. Not at obstacles. Not at others around you. Eyes fixed on Jesus. And your life naturally steers toward Him.

Many Christians ski with their eyes down. They're focused on their problems, their circumstances, their fears. And their spiritual lives reflect that focus – they're stuck, stumbling, unable to move forward smoothly. They pick up unwanted speed of anxiety because they're not looking ahead.

Tomorrow's Practice: Today, practice intentional visual focus. When you feel anxious or stuck, pause and ask: where are my eyes looking? Am I focused on obstacles, on my feet, on my fears? Then deliberately shift your gaze. Look ahead. Look at where God is calling you. Look at the destination, not the difficulty. Practice physically moving your eyes, and notice how your whole body settles, your direction clarifies, your balance improves.

Reflection Question: Where are your eyes currently focused – on obstacles and fears, or on Jesus and the destination He's calling you toward?
