Learning to Ride with a Faith Guide
A Mountain Biking Devotional
Ever tried mountain biking as a beginner, wobbling like you’re on a unicycle, hoping you don’t crash into the nearest bush? Your legs are shaky, the trail’s a puzzle, and you’re just trying to stay upright. Then a seasoned rider—a coach—steps in, showing you how to balance, brake smoothly, and keep moving forward. As a new biker, a mentor turns your chaos into progress. Growing in Christ works the same way. You need a guide—a spiritual coach—to help you navigate life’s bumps and grow strong in faith.
Let’s roll into 2 Timothy 2:1-2: “You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”
Paul’s mentoring Timothy like a patient coach teaching a newbie how to ride without falling. As a beginner, you don’t expect to master biking overnight—you learn step by step, guided by someone who’s been down the trail before. Paul urges Timothy to grow in Christ’s grace and pass on what he’s learned, like a coach helping you find your balance and then encouraging you to help others. Growing in faith takes time, practice, and a mentor—someone to show you how to pray, read the Bible, and live for Jesus. With their help, you’ll go from stumbling to riding God’s path with confidence.
What’s this mean for us? As a new mountain biker, you’re learning to steer without swerving and brake without skidding into a tree. A coach helps you avoid mistakes, like gripping the handlebars too tight. In faith, life’s challenges—school stress, friend drama, or figuring out what it means to follow Jesus—can feel like a bumpy trail. You might trip up, like forgetting to pray or not knowing how to handle a tough choice. That’s where a mentor comes in—a parent, pastor, or friend who’s walked with God longer. They can teach you to pray like it’s natural, point you to Scripture (try the Gospel of John!), and cheer you on as you grow.
Ask yourself: Who’s a mentor I can turn to for help growing in Christ? What’s one step I can take to learn from them today? God’s the ultimate coach, and He sends guides to keep you on track.
Pray: Lord, thanks for being my head coach, even when I’m wobbling like a beginner on a bumpy trail. Lead me to a mentor to guide me in Your grace, so I can grow strong and ride for You. Keep my faith steady and my heart ready. Amen.
Take action: Today, choose one “faith guide”—maybe a parent, church friend, or pastor. Ask them a simple question, like “How do you stay close to Jesus?” or read a Bible verse together (like Matthew 5:14-16). Write “God’s my coach, mentors my guide” and put it on your bike or backpack. When life’s trail feels rough, lean on your mentor’s wisdom and keep pedaling, one step at a time.
