Following the Light, Shining for Others
A Dirt Biking Devotional
Ever been a young dirt bike rider, pulse racing, squeezing the throttle like it’s your only hope, freaked out you’ll lose the rider you’re following? You’re just learning to ride without crashing, and the idea of them speeding around a turn feels like you’re about to be ditched in the dusty dark. But then you hit a trail fork, and there they are, waiting to show you the right path, keeping the crew together. As a beginner, you trust they’ll stop for you, just as you pause for the kid behind you. Growing in Christ is like following a light through the night. You trust Jesus to shine the way, and as you grow, you’re called to light the path for someone else at life’s forks to keep them on the faith trail.
Let’s ride into John 8:12, 16:13-14: “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ … But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.”
Jesus is shining like a headlamp on a night ride, guiding a nervous young biker through a dark trail. As a kid on a dirt bike, you’re terrified of losing the rider ahead, but you trust they’ll wait at the fork to point you right. Meanwhile, you’re learning to pause for the rider behind you, ensuring they don’t get lost in the shadows. Jesus, the Light of the World, guides you with His truth, and the Holy Spirit lights up the path through prayer and Scripture. He calls you to shine for others, like a rider holding a flashlight, by sharing His truth. It’s a chain of light: you follow Jesus’ glow, and you help the person behind you see it too, keeping the faith crew together, even when the trail gets dim.
What’s this mean for us? As a young dirt bike rider, you’re focused on not stalling or plowing into a rut, eyes locked on the rider ahead, heart pounding when they vanish around a bend. But you trust they’ll wait at the fork, just as you stop to keep the kid behind you from veering into a tree. In faith, life’s path—school stress, friend drama, or figuring out how to follow Jesus—can feel like a dark trail, like you’re one turn from getting lost. You might stumble, like forgetting to pray or choosing a wrong path. That’s okay! Trust Jesus, your Light, to shine at every junction, and let the Spirit guide you. As you grow, pause to light the way for someone else—a friend, sibling, or classmate—by sharing a verse (like Matthew 5:16), praying with them, or encouraging their faith. You don’t need to be a pro—just shine a little light at life’s forks to point them to Jesus.
Ask yourself: Who’s “behind me” in faith that I can light up at a fork? How can I help them see Jesus today, trusting He’s guiding me? Jesus is always shining ahead, ready to lead you and help you lead others.
Pray: Lord, thanks for being my Light, shining at every fork, even when I’m a shaky newbie. Help me trust Your glow and guide someone behind me toward You, keeping our faith crew bright. Keep my heart steady and my wheels rolling. Amen.
Take action: Today, pick one person “behind you” in faith—a friend, sibling, or classmate. Pause to guide them, like sharing a verse (try John 8:12), praying together, or talking about trusting Jesus. Write “Follow Christ’s light, shine bright tonight” and stick it on your bike or backpack. When life’s path feels dark, trust Jesus is shining ahead, and help the next rider stay on His trail, keeping the group growing in faith.
