FINDING YOUR SWEET SPOT

A Wake Surfing Devotional

Here's what blows people's minds about wake surfing: you're literally riding a wave created by a boat, but once you find the sweet spot, you can drop the rope and surf endlessly without any effort. Beginners think they need to grip that rope like their life depends on it, fighting to stay in position. Meanwhile, experienced surfers barely touch the rope – they've learned to find the pocket where the boat's energy does all the work.

The magic happens in that perfect zone right behind the boat where the wave is clean and powerful. Get too far back and you sink. Get too close and you get sucked into the prop wash (not recommended for continued breathing). But find that sweet spot, and suddenly you're gliding effortlessly on energy that isn't even yours.

What cracks me up is how we approach following Jesus. We think it's all about white-knuckling our way through the Christian life – grip that rope tighter! Work harder! Be more disciplined! We exhaust ourselves trying to generate our own spiritual momentum when the whole point is learning to ride the wave of what God is already doing.

Jesus tried to tell his friends this in Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." He's basically saying, "Stop fighting so hard – there's a sweet spot where my power does the heavy lifting."

And in John 15:4-5, he uses a different analogy but the same principle: "Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine... Apart from me you can do nothing." It's like he's saying, "Find your position in the wake of what I'm doing, and you'll be amazed at what becomes possible."

The irony is that dropping the rope requires more skill, not less. You have to learn to read the wave, adjust your position, and trust the boat's power. It's not about being passive – it's about being positioned.

This Week's Challenge: Pick one area where you've been white-knuckling your Christian life (maybe being patient, showing love, or finding peace). Instead of trying harder, try positioning yourself better. Spend time in prayer, read what Jesus said about that area, and look for ways to "drop the rope" and let his power do the work.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What's the difference between being lazy and learning to rely on God's power rather than your own effort?

  2. In what areas of your life do you tend to "grip the rope" too tightly instead of trusting God to carry you?

  3. What would it look like for you to find the "sweet spot" where you're actively participating in what God is doing rather than trying to generate your own spiritual momentum?
