Crossing the Finish Line: Celebrating Growth and Looking Ahead

A Running Devotional

A beginning runner who was barely able to jog a quarter mile six months ago crosses the finish line of a 5K. As they cross, something happens. Maybe they cry. Maybe they feel a surge of joy. Maybe they feel like they've accomplished something significant. Because they have.

The finish line matters. Not just for the time recorded. But because it's a moment to celebrate growth. Six months ago, this was impossible. Now it's done. The body that couldn't do this can do this. The person who doubted themselves has proven they can do something hard. That matters.

But here's what's interesting: crossing the finish line isn't the end. It's a new beginning. The runner who just finished a 5K starts thinking about running longer distances. The person who thought they couldn't run at all now knows they can. Crossing one finish line opens the possibility of crossing many more.

Spiritually, this is how growth works.

You commit to a spiritual goal – maybe it's reading the Bible daily for a month. You cross the finish line. You're amazed at what you've done. Your faith has grown. You know God better. And then you think: what's next? Maybe I can read the Bible daily for a year. Maybe I can add prayer. Maybe I can commit to serving. Crossing one spiritual finish line makes the next one seem possible.

Philippians 3:13-14 says: "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

Forget what's behind. Press toward what's ahead. Don't stop at the finish line – that's just a marker. Keep running.

Hebrews 12:1 says: "Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."

A race. Multiple finish lines. A lifetime of running.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 says: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day."

Finish the race. Keep the faith. The ultimate finish line is eternal.

Proverbs 4:18 says: "The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day."

Brighter and brighter. From one finish line to the next. Continuous growth.

Tomorrow's Practice: Celebrate a recent spiritual finish line – a goal you achieved, a growth you experienced, a distance you covered. Acknowledge how far you've come. Then look ahead. What's the next finish line? What's God calling you toward next? Don't rest on past accomplishments – let them create momentum for future growth.

Reflection Question: Do you celebrate spiritual growth and then look ahead to the next goal, or do you either ignore your growth or get stuck resting on past accomplishments?
